Expert review of Kemptown
Kemptown (or Kemp Town) is named after the architect Thomas Kemp who designed the grand seafront terraces and garden squares at the east end of town in the 1820s. Lying just east of Brighton Pier and running most of the way to Brighton Marina, its Regency and Victorian streets are best known for their gay-run shops, bars and hangouts, including the campest teashop I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting.
With a jumble of guest houses (some brilliant, others less so), there are always people coming and going. Kemptown also has an appealingly quirky, bohemian side, with excellent bric-à-brac shops, galleries and cafés, including places which aim to be all three.
