Tasty takeaway sandwiches made from traditional local ingredients in Dubrovnik Old Town.

My favourite place for an inexpensive lunchtime snack in the Old Town, Škola (pronounced shkola, which means school) is a perfect example of ‘less is more’. On the go since 1997, Dinka Popović’s sandwiches have become known far beyond Dubrovnik's city walls, having won acclaim from fickle observers such as the Washington Post and the Daily Telegraph.

Food and drink: 

Generous slabs of Dinka’s freshly-baked bread, still warm from the oven, are filled with either sir iz ulja (cheese in oil), or pršut (Dalmatian ham, similar to Italian prosciutto), or both. Depending on the time of year you might also get a few slices of fresh tomato or some lettuce. All the ingredients are locally produced and the sandwiches team up perfectly with a glass of Pelješac red wine. Dinka also makes strudel sa jabukom (apple strudel) and coffee.

Recommended dishes: 

Try a cheese and pršut (prosciutto) sandwich with a glass of red wine.

Ambience: 

It’s in a bit of a time warp and very informal – with a wooden-panelled room with a counter and just four tables with benches, plus two or three tables on the paved alley outside. There is not much space but many customers come for takeaway.

Service: 

It's all down to the family here so they do everything their own way at their own pace.

It's in Antuninska ulica, on a narrow side street between Placa and Prijeko, in Dubrovnik’s Old Town.

Price advice: 

A cheese sandwich is 23 kuna; a pršut (prosciutto) sandwich is 23 kuna and a pršut and cheese sandwich is 27 kuna.
