Expert review of Bagels & Beans
The Museum Quarter is short on good lunchtime pit stops. When I'm in the area, my favourite port of call is this branch of the Bagels & Beans chain (beans refers to coffee not the Heinz kind, by the way).
Eight types of bagel filled with plain or flavoured cream cheese (I can recommend the pesto and sun-dried tomato version) form the basis of the menu. You can also add ingredients such as smoked salmon, pastrami etc. Equally recommended are the coffees and fresh juices, and for the sweet of tooth there are brownies and muffins.
The Van Baerlestraat outlet is a cosy, split-level space, with murals of bagels on the walls, and jazz or classical music playing on the occasions I've been in.
Courteous, attentive.
On the south side of the Museumplein - the Van Gogh Museum is about 200 yards away.
Bagel with cream cheese from 3.35 euros; coffee from 1.90 euros.
Some 40 throughout Holland, with over a dozen in Amsterdam - including at Keizersgracht 504.
