Best for Escapists - Expert review of Finca de Arrieta
I love Finca de Arrieta, part of Lanzarote Retreats, which is – true to its name – a real retreat that appeals to those who fancy something a bit different and are passionate about the environment. My beautiful Mongolian yurt with adjoining wet room and lounge/kitchen was one of the most memorable and relaxing places I have stayed in.
In the north of the island, 200 metres from the beach and the small town of Arrieta.
Choose from eight different kinds of yurt accommodation, from one with shared wet room, lounge and kitchen right up to the Eco Yurt Royale, a magnificent set up with three bedrooms with own terrace, day bed and dining area. At night, you can look at the stars through the top of your Mongolian, canopied tent.
Accommodation is set in extensive landscaped gardens, with solar-heated swimming pool (including a section for children), play area and farmland. Guests are encouraged to pick their own produce from the organic vegetable plot.
This is self-catering accommodation, so you will need to bring food or drink with you, get it delivered (fresh produce boxes can be delivered), or visit the local bars and restaurants.
Children love feeding the rabbits, riding Mollie the donkey and collecting the chickens’ eggs. The two rescue dogs, Foxi and Zeta, are very friendly, and Lily, a grey and white cat, kept me company one evening.
The English owners of Finca de Arrieta, part of the aptly named Lanzarote Retreats, greet and treat you like old friends. Within five minutes of wandering in, I had been introduced to the owners' sons and introduced to their friend, a British artist, who was staying there, offered a lift and invited to lunch. There is no service as such: you check in and out yourself, but it is a very sociable place, where the owners' children tend to make friends with those of the guests, and every Friday everyone is invited to a local restaurant.
Clients here are 90 percent British and there are a lot of repeat guests. They are mostly families with young children, but also those with teenagers, who usually think the yurts very ‘cool’. Couples wanting to get off the beaten track, experience the real Lanzaorote or just have a romantic break come here too.
There is a whole range of accommodation here from, the 5 star yurt (perhaps the world’s first) to simple, albeit silk-lined yurts, with shared kitchen and bathroom.
