Expert review of Amfora
Reopened after renovation in summer 2007, this big 1970s building is set in landscaped grounds with palms and a spectacular cascading pool, overlooking the sea and backed by pinewoods. Lying just outside Hvar Town, it has the advantage of being near to all the main attractions, bars and restaurants, but far enough away to avoid the crowds.
Overlooking a secluded bay, a 10-minute walk along a lovely coastal path from Hvar Town’s main square and port, which is served by daily ferries from Split. The hotel offers a free shuttle service and luggage transport to and from the ferry.
There are 324 rooms and suites. Standard rooms have park views only, while superior rooms and suites have either park or sea views (I’d definitely pay the extra to wake up and see the sea). All have minimalist furniture, fabrics in cream, beige and chocolate, and slick modern bathrooms.

Out front, overlooking the sea, there’s a vast terraced garden planted with palms and Mediterranean shrubs, with a cascading pool and a bar-restaurant, all beautifully lit at night. There is free WiFi throughout the property.
A good buffet breakfast with plenty of fresh fruit and a range of cooked options is served in the Windows on Hvar restaurant on the fourth floor, with sea views but no outdoor tables. A buffet dinner (some guests are on half board) is also served here. The Maestral Yacht Deck restaurant does Dalmatian seafood specialities, while the Cascades restaurant offers light meals by the pool. The Splash beach bar is for drinks and music overlooking the sea. I’d suggest opting for breakfast only, and eating out in Hvar Town in the evenings.
One of the Amfora’s top draws is its magnificent cascading pool with water slides, which children love. There’s also a Kids’ Club. Next to the hotel, the Bonj Le Bain beach sits in a bay ringed by a 1930s white stone colonnade with private cabanas (massage available), four-posters and sun beds for hire (payable).
The multi-lingual staff are helpful and friendly.

Amfora is ideal for those who want to combine visiting Hvar Town with lazing by a pool in spectacular surroundings. With its great leisure facilities, it’s ideal for families with kids, but maybe a bit big and impersonal for couples.
