Expert review of AC Palau De Bellavista
The Catalans invented urban designer chic and the Bellavista has style in droves (think Norman Foster meets Habitat), ultimate creature comforts (I slept like a baby), a central location in the Old Town and, as its name suggests amazing views over Girona.
Set out on its own, high up a steep hill close to the Old Town, but far enough away from the narrow streets and bells to be blissfully quiet. The Jewish Quarter, Arabic baths and shops and restaurants are all within five to ten minutes walk.
When you enter the room, your first thought is minimalist chic - dark wood floors, charcoal panels, pale grey and white decor but then you see the floor to ceiling splash of colour: a glass panel with a full-colour image of the Old Town. All the rooms have the same decor and those overlooking the Japanese- style pebbled patio are the quietest but the other side of the hotel is similarly peaceful and has stunning city views. There’s a free minibar, WIFI and a mini sound-system in every room.
The dark wood and oversized floral print of the ground floor reception area leads through to a vast atrium bar/lounge and breakfast area overlooking the terrace with panaoramic views of the city below. Think the Lloyds Building given a Mediterranean makeover – all terracotta walls, brushed stainless steel, mezzanine walkways, glass panelling, warm lighting and sky-blue blinds. The bar looks like a designer library with the drinks hidden away behind discreet sliding doors.
Breakfast is almost worth the price of admission alone with a broad, exquisitely presented selection of fresh fruit juices, local goat cheeses and jamons, cereals and divine croissants and pain chocolats. The hotel restaurant Numun specialises in gastronomically stylish versions of traditional Catalan cuisine, has its own separate entrance and is a ‘destination’ restaurant in itself.
No pool but a solarium and 24 hour room service. There are also two function/conference rooms.
Discreet but efficient with youngish, stylishly dressed staff, in keeping with the hotel.
International business people, visiting VIPs, as well as youngish Catalan couples, particularly at weekends.
Special offers available at weekends or during holiday periods.
