Best for Luxury - Expert review of Villa Dubrovnik
Reopened in June 2010, after total renovation, Villa Dubrovnik is a pure-lined white modernist building, constructed into the cliffs in a series of levels. The interior spaces are light and airy, the ambience sophisticated but relaxed. The 56 rooms and suites all have sea views and private terraces, and amenities include a spa and small private beach.
Built into a cliff above the sea, overlooking the island of Lokrum, it is a 15-minute walk east of Dubrovnik Old Town (also served by complimentary boat service).
The 50 rooms and six spacious suites all have chic minimalist furnishing, earthy cream and beige fabrics, wooden floors, and floor-to-ceiling windows opening onto teak-and-glass sea-view terraces with ambient lighting. I love the en-suite glass-walled bathrooms, with bathtub and shower, under-floor heating and Bulgari toiletries. The suites also have indoor Jacuzzis, while the deluxe suites have an open-air Jacuzzi on the terrace.

The hotel restaurants are down below – you can sit out on two lovely sunny terraces with pine trees and cypresses and fine views onto the turquoise sea. One level down again lies the hotel beach. Up top, the summer rooftop Sky Lounge terrace affords stunning views of the sun setting over Dubrovnik Old Town.
A la carte breakfast is served in Restaurant Pjerin, both indoors and on the sea-view terrace. Pjeran’s dinner menu features refined Mediterranean cuisine prepared from local organic ingredients, with a sommelier at hand to help guests chose their wines. The informal Al Fresco Bar Giardino works lunchtime only – the chef cooks in a wok at a counter under the pine trees to produce light seasonal Mediterranean fare. The open-air rooftop Sky Bar does evening cocktails.
The Villa Spa offers beauty treatments using Terrake products, plus massage, yoga, pilates and a sea-view indoor pool. Below, the hotel beach is a series of concrete terraces built into the rocks, with sun beds and umbrellas and easy access into the sea. Vila Dubrovnik also offers special four-day programmes, with themes including detox, romantic, sailing and photography.
Friendly, polite and professional.
