Best for Food - Expert review of Drakes of Brighton
This grand, curvy-fronted Regency townhouse oozes kerb appeal: from the minimalist water feature on the forecourt to the professional welcome, you can tell, right from the start, that it aims high. Rumour has it that Kylie Minogue, Cate Blanchett and Kirstie Allsopp all adore it; I’d recommend it to anyone.
Right on the Kemptown seafront, a short stroll from Brighton Pier and the Royal Pavilion, with commanding Channel views.
When it opened, Drakes made headlines by setting new standards for boutique accommodation in Brighton; since then, it’s gone from strength to strength. The style is crisp, cool and modern, within wonderful Regency rooms with high ceilings and decorative cornices. Not all the rooms look out onto the sea but those that do are truly breathtaking, especially the Feature Room which has three giant sash windows, a splendid bath with views of the pier, and a telescope.

The ground floor cocktail lounge (open 24 hours to residents; open 11am–11pm Mon–Sat, noon–10.30pm Sun to non-residents) is fresh by day and cosy by night. The award-winning, top-quality restaurant – sleek, but unfussy – is a destination in its own right.
As well as cocktails, the lounge offers a choice of Champagne. The Restaurant at Drakes serves beautifully presented modern cuisine.
If you’d like a massage, a makeover or even a photo session in the privacy of your room, all you need to do is ask; the hotel can also fix up appointments at local beauty salons.
Like everything else about Drakes, the service is smart and discreet; staff can arrange activities such as yacht racing, clay pigeon shooting or zorbing on request, and are happy to make a special occasion magical by delivering a bottle of bubbly to enjoy in the bath.

Celebrities, honeymooners and couples treating themselves to a luxury seaside break.
Parking is available for £12.50 per evening; tempting welcome gifts can be ordered on request. If you can’t afford one of the best rooms, console yourself with one of the smaller ones at the back, further from the traffic noise of the seafront road.
